You Have a real Enemy

INTRODUCTION:

The moment you trusted Christ, you made an enemy.

Actually, you already had an enemy, you just joined the fight.

Read This:

1 Peter 5:8 • Ephesians 6:10-12 • James 4:7 • Romans 5:1-5 • 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

His name is Satan. And he's not a cartoon character with a pitchfork.

The Bible describes him as "a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8).
He's real. He's active. And he has a strategy.

Here's what he does:

DOUBT – "Did God really say that? Are you sure you're saved? Maybe you're not good enough."

DIVIDE – He causes conflict between believers, division in churches, tension in families.

DISTRACT – He pulls your attention from Christ to a thousand lesser things, good things, but not the best thing.

DISCOURAGE – "You messed up again. God must be so disappointed. You'll never change."

Sound familiar?

Now before you panic, here's the most important thing you need to know: Satan is a defeated enemy.

At the cross, Jesus crushed his head (Genesis 3:15). He disarmed him publicly (Colossians 2:15). Satan has no legal claim on you. He can tempt you, accuse you, and harass you, but he cannot own you. You belong to Christ. There is nothing he can do to change that.

So how do you fight?

James 4:7 gives us the battle plan: "Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you."

Notice the order:

  1. Submit to God – Stay close to God. Pray. Meditate on scripture. Obey the Lord.

  2. Resist the devil – Recognize his tactics and stand firm.

  3. He will flee – He has no power when you're walking with God.

You don't fight for victory. You fight from victory.

But here's something else you need to know: This life won't be easy.

Jesus promised, "In the world you will have tribulation" (John 16:33). Not might have. Will have.

You're going to face:

  • Hardship

  • Loss

  • Disappointment

  • Spiritual attacks

  • Trials you didn't see coming

And honestly? Sometimes following Jesus makes life harder. Obeying God might cost you friendships, opportunities, or comfort.

But, and this is the part people miss, God doesn't waste your pain.

Listen to this: "We also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4).

God uses your valleys to:

  • Develop your character

  • Deepen your faith

  • Produce Christ-likeness in you

  • Turn your pain into bridges to help others

Think about it. The people who've helped you most in life, weren't they the ones who had been through something hard? Their scars became your comfort. Their valleys became bridges to reach you.

That's what God does. He takes what Satan meant for evil and redeems it for good (Genesis 50:20). The trial you're facing today might be the testimony that helps someone else tomorrow.

Paul understood this.

He had a "thorn in the flesh", something painful, persistent, and unremoved despite his prayers. God's response? "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

God doesn't always remove the storm. Sometimes He strengthens you in the storm. Sometimes He uses the storm to prove His faithfulness.

So yes, you have an enemy. Yes, life will be hard.

But you also have:

  • A Savior who's already won the war

  • The Holy Spirit living in you

  • God's promises that never fail

  • Hope that doesn't disappoint

  • A purpose in your pain

And Jesus finished that promise this way: "But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

We win. Not because we're strong, but because He is.

Think About It:

  1. Which of Satan's tactics (doubt, divide, distract, discourage) do you struggle with most?

  2. Can you think of a valley in your life that God used to build character or help others?

  3. What's one way you can "submit to God" this week to resist the enemy?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You that Satan is a defeated enemy. Help me recognize his tactics and stand firm. When trials come, remind me that You're using them for my good and Your glory. Give me strength to persevere. In Jesus' name, Amen.
